Comparison of Kay Jewelers Prices Vs. Other Online Vendors
Like most other online vendors, Kay Jewelers list a virtual inventory where they don’t own their diamonds. What this means is that other online vendors may also have access to the SAME EXACT diamonds they are selling.
More notably, Kay shares some of the same suppliers with a few of my recommended vendors. This has enabled me to identify and make comparisons of the same exact diamonds in both inventories.
James Allen vs. Kay Jewelers – 1.08 Carat I color SI2 Clarity Round Diamond
So, I found this particular round diamond being sold for $7499.99 at Kays ; http://design.kay-diamonds.com/diamonds/diamond/diam1320133/. The diamond is graded by GIA (report no: 2176346930) as a triple excellent. It also has a table of 57.0% and a depth of 61.6%.
With a quick search at James Allen, I found the same exact stone being listed for only $4,880.
Kay Jewelers 1 Carat Princess Cut: $10,299
James Allen 1 Carat Princess Cut: $4,890
Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. Now, I want to emphasize that we are comparing the same exact diamonds. Mind you, these are the same exact diamonds that we are comparing.
Everything in terms of GIA certification report, carat, clarity, cut and color are exactly the same. However, there is more than a 100% price difference between the 2 companies!
To show that this is not a fluke mistake, I did more comparisons across different vendors and I keep ending up with the same result every time! Here’s 2 more random examples which showed similar results…
Kay Jewelers Emerald Cut: $15,599.99
James Allen Emerald Cut: $6,690
This time round, the difference is a staggering 2.3 times more! Feel free to do a search on both websites and compare the prices of their loose diamonds for yourself. All you need to do is to play around with the sliders and you can narrow down identical diamonds easily.
As a consumer, I don’t know what you think about the staggering price differences. Is it worth paying thousands of dollars more for the same exact diamond from Kay when you can pay significantly less elsewhere?
Speaking from my viewpoint, I don’t see why there’s a need to. As a practical consumer, I would never pay thousands of dollars more for the same exact product. If you have a different rationale and think otherwise, please leave a comment below and let me know why you would do that.
In conclusion, Kay Jewelers is one online jeweler where you won’t get the best value for your money. Besides less than satisfactory service standards, their diamonds are way over-priced when compared to other online vendors.
